North Middle School is participating in Heifer International’s Read to Feed program through their English classes. Read to Feed is a nationwide campaign that promotes literacy while heightening students' awareness that their actions can make a difference in the lives of others. On February 26, 2018, Ms. Jen Winter, a representative from Heifer International, came to speak with our students. She shared how the program originated, the impact it has made in the lives of those in need, and how the program creates opportunities to empower and educate young women.
As a school community, we are pledging to read to make an impact on the global community. The more books students read, the more donations they earn, the more livestock and resources they can donate to families in need. With every page we turn, we help to improve the lives of people around the world! Please check out their website for more information - readtofeed.org

In honor of International Literacy Day, members of the English department collaborated to select short stories for each grade level to promote literacy and cultural awareness within our school. Homeroom teachers led students through an interactive read aloud during an extended homeroom period. Short stories included: “Amigo Brothers” by Piri Thomas, “Mother and Daughter” by Gary Soto, and “Rules of The Game” by Amy Tan. It was wonderful to see our students actively engaged in reading short stories that reflected various cultural perspectives. Scholastic Scope is hosting a contest for young writers. Please review the attached contest rules and guidelines. Then, when you are ready, write up your story and submit it with the attached entry form. If you have any questions, please talk with English teacher or Mrs. Serowik, the NMS English Chairperson.
Start practicing your best smile because picture day is on the way! On September 27, students will take their yearbook photos during English class. Please note that it is not required to purchase picture packages.
